ASUP Issues One-Month Strike Ultimatum

  The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a one month ultimatum to government for resumption of strike action. The union had suspended its industrial action which ran for 61 days in June 2021 after reaching an agreement with the government. Addressing journalists in Yola at the end of its 102nd National Executive Council meeting, ASUP’s national president, Anderson Uzeibe, said the decision became necessary after the government failed to implement important aspects of the memorandum of action signed with the union nine months ago. According to Uzeibe, the government was yet to release the sum of N15 billion as the first tranche of the N800 billion revitalisation fund nine months after the approval by President Muhammadu Buhari. ASUU Strike: UNICAL Orders Students Out Of Hostels

  The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has ordered students of the institution out of their hostels with immediate effect due to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). A statement released on Tuesday by the Registrar Gabriel Egbe said following the industrial action embarked upon by ASUU, the school can no longer provide essential services in the hostels. “The strike has adversely affected the provision of essential services in the halls of residence and on the campus, generally making it difficult to meet up with the management of these essential services. “Consequently, the acting Chief Security Officer of the institution has been advised to lock up all the hostels as well as deploy security men to man all the halls of residence. “Management wishes all students journey mercies, as they travel to meet their parents/guardians,” the statement said. MOUAU orders students to vacate hostels

Management has directed the closure of students’ halls of residence with effect from 12.00 midnight on Tuesday, 29th March 2022 following the strike action embarked by the various Staff Unions in the University. All students residing in the halls of residence are by this notice, requested to vacate the halls on or before 12.00 midnight on Tuesday, 29th March 2022 with the exception of B.Agric. students who are currently on the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The SIWES students should submit their names to the Dean, Student Affairs Department for compilation and temporary accommodation allocation for the remaining period of their SIWES programme. Inter-Religious Council, ASUU Disagree Over Commencement Of Strike

 The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, has criticised the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government over the ongoing strike by lecturers across universities in the country. He said ASUU was impatient and disrespected him and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, by going ahead with the strike despite wading into the matter. Ayokunle said the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council, which they both chair, would have left ASUU to continue but for the future of the affected students. The CAN chairman spoke during the first quarter meeting of the council with the theme ‘Education for peace and nation building’ in Abuja on Monday. UNIJOS Wins The Right To Host NUGA 2024

The University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau State, has won the right to host the 2024 edition of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA).  The university’s media representative, Joe Apu, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Lagos at the close of this year’s edition.According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, expressed optimism in hosting the next game saying it was an opportunity the school had always looked forward to. He promised to provide a state of the art facilities that athletes and officials would be proud of.He added that the 27th edition of the Games in 2024 will go down in history as the best of its kind. The university won the hosting rights after defeating Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, while the University of Calabar withdrew its bid for the games. 2022 UTME/DE: JAMB Registers 1.8M Candidates So Far

As registration for the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (JAMB) and Direct Entry (DE) ended on Saturday 26th March 2022, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it registered a total of 1,837,011 candidates registered for the examination.   It would be recalled that the 2022UTME/DE Application for admission to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria for the 2022/2023 academic session commenced from Saturday, 19 February, 2022. A total of 1,338,687 candidates registered for the 2021 UTME. For the 2019 examination, it recorded over 1.8 million candidates, while the total number of applications received in 2018 was 1,653,127 as against 1,722,269 applications received in 2017. However, as the registration for the 2022 exercise ended on Saturday investigations show that scores of candidates are still left not captured during the period.
